Through-Hole Assembly

Through-hole assembly inserts component leads into plated holes and solders them to the board. Connectors, magnetics and mechanically stressed parts often use this approach, either on their own or alongside surface-mount components.

Choose the process around the board

Selective soldering, wave soldering and hand soldering each have different access and setup requirements. Ask the assembler to review component placement, hole geometry and heat-sensitive parts before the process is chosen.

Define mechanical details

Provide seating height, lead-trim requirements, connector orientation and any fastener or support details. Heavy parts may need additional support. Mechanical dimensions belong on an assembly drawing instead of in an informal email thread.

Review mixed-technology sequencing

An SMT and through-hole board usually needs more than one assembly step. Confirm which parts are fitted at each stage and how existing solder joints and sensitive components will be protected. Include any cleaning or coating requirements in the review.

What to include in your RFQ

  • Lead and finished-hole requirements
  • Connector orientation and seating heights
  • Mechanical support and fastener details
  • Soldering and cleaning constraints
  • Inspection criteria for the assembled board

Confirm the process limits, material availability and acceptance criteria in your project quotation. They depend on the design and the manufacturing facility.
