Flex PCB Assembly
Flex and rigid-flex assembly must account for how the circuit is supported during processing and used in its final shape. The assembly release should clearly distinguish component areas, stiffened areas and regions intended to bend.
Document the mechanical configuration
Provide a drawing that identifies bend zones, stiffeners, connector locations and the final assembled shape. Static and repeated flexing have different requirements. Confirm the construction with the fabricator rather than applying a generic bend-radius rule.
Review handling and support
Flexible circuits may need carriers or fixtures during paste printing, placement and reflow. Ask who supplies the tooling and how its cost and storage are managed. Specify any restrictions on temporary adhesives or cleaning.
Verify the assembled condition
Inspect components and joints with the assembly supported as intended. If a flexing or mechanical test is required, supply its method, fixtures and acceptance limits. Electrical continuity alone does not validate a dynamic flex application.
What to include in your RFQ
- Stackup and flex construction drawing
- Bend zones and intended operating condition
- Stiffener and support requirements
- Assembly carrier or fixture plan
- Mechanical and electrical acceptance criteria
Confirm the process limits, material availability and acceptance criteria in your project quotation. They depend on the design and the manufacturing facility.
